The Land Rover Series 1 Pick up was introduced in 1948 and marked the beginning of the Land Rover brand as it is known today. The model was developed in the United Kingdom as a functional and wide-ranging vehicle for both agricultural use and light industrial applications. The Land Rover Series 1 Pick up is characterized by its aluminum body panels mounted on a steel ladder chassis, a construction prompted at the time in part by the scarcity of steel in the postwar period. The design is functional and recognizable, with flat body panels and removable panels.
Within the 1948 to 1958 production period, the Land Rover Series 1 Pick up came with various wheelbases, including 80, 86, 88, 107 and 109 inches. Over the years, the model underwent technical and structural advancements, including changes to engine variants and axles to meet changing requirements and operating conditions. The basic design with rigid axles and leaf springs all around remained a constant element. The simple and modular construction made the model suitable for a variety of body styles, including the pickup configuration.
The Land Rover Series 1 Pick up was exported worldwide and found its way to both civilian and government agencies. The model played a role in diverse industries ranging from agriculture and mining to military applications. Thanks to its setup with engageable all-wheel drive and separate low gearing, the vehicle was usable in a variety of off-road conditions. Production numbers of the Series 1 ran to several hundred thousand units over a ten-year period, laying the foundation for later generations of Land Rover.
The Land Rover Series 1 Pick up is considered the first generation within a model line that would become one of the longest-produced off-road vehicle concepts in the world. The original design principle, focused on simplicity, functionality and adaptability, remained recognizably present in later Land Rover models.
