The 1972 MG B GT is the closed 2+2 variant of the MGB series, introduced in 1965 to complement the open roadster. The fixed roofline design came about in collaboration with Pininfarina and is distinguished by its hatchback construction with fold-down rear seats. The 1972 MG B GT thus combines the recognizable lines of the MGB with additional practicality, without departing from the original concept of a compact British sports car.
The MGB was produced from 1962 to 1980 and became one of the most widely built British sports cars ever, with a total production of more than 500,000 units. Around 125,000 units were produced of the GT version. The 1972 MG B GT belongs to the chrome bumper generation, which was delivered until 1974 and is visually distinguished from the later models with modified body details.
Technically, the 1972 MG B GT is based on a self-supporting body, which when introduced was more modern than the separate chassis of its predecessor, the MGA. The front suspension with independent suspension and coil springs and the rear axle with leaf springs were characteristic of the model and remained largely unchanged throughout the production years. This construction contributed to the positioning of the MGB series as an accessible sports car within the range available at the time.
Within MG history, the 1972 MG B GT occupies a firm place as a representative of the early 1970s, a period when the model was widely exported internationally, particularly to Europe and North America. With its extended production time and consistent basic construction, the MGB series remained recognizable and technically uncluttered, contributing to its long-term presence in the market. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
