The 1974 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLC is part of the C107 series, the coupe variant of the R107 SL introduced in 1971. Whereas the SL was positioned as a roadster, the SLC offered a fixed roof design with a longer wheelbase, allowing for a 2+2 configuration. The 1974 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLC came as a comfortable gran turismo within the upper segment and combined Bruno Sacco's distinctive design with the solid engineering for which the brand was known in the 1970s.
Within the C107 series, the 280 SLC occupied an important place. Starting in 1974, this model was equipped with the six-cylinder in-line engine from the M110 series, equipped with double overhead camshafts. This engine concept was used in several Mercedes-Benz models and was known for its modern construction for the time. Production of the SLC ran from 1972 to 1981, with approximately 10,000 of the 280 SLC estimated to have been built, making this particular type a less common version within the series.
The body of the 1974 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLC is distinguished by its longer roofline and larger side windows with no center pillar, which provided an open appearance when the windows were lowered. The combination of comfort, space and the character of a coupe made the SLC suitable for long-distance use. During the same period, the platform was also used for international rally activities, which contributed to the technical further development of the model.
The 1974 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLC positioned itself at the time as a representative coupe within the Mercedes-Benz range, alongside the S-Class and the SL. The model reflects the brand's design and safety philosophy from the 1970s, with a focus on structural rigidity and passive safety, themes that were becoming increasingly important within the automotive industry at that time.
