The Peugeot 404 1971 is part of the 404 series produced by Peugeot from 1960 to 1975. Designed by Pininfarina, the model was characterized by a clean-lined design that was in line with the international design language of the 1960s. The Peugeot 404 was positioned in the mid-range segment and succeeded the Peugeot 403. A total of about 2.8 million units of the 404 were built worldwide, including various body styles.
The 1971 Peugeot 404 belongs to the later production years of the model. During this period, the 404 had already become an established member of Peugeot's model lineup, in part due to its solid construction and wide applicability. The 404 came as a sedan, break, coupe, convertible and pickup, with the sedan being the most widely produced model. Production took place not only in France but also in several other countries, which contributed to the model's international spread.
Technically, the Peugeot 404 was known for its conventional but thoughtful body, with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. The chassis was designed with comfort and durability in mind, features that contributed to the model's popularity both in Europe and abroad. In different markets, the 404 was used for a variety of purposes, from private use to cab and government vehicle.
This 1971 Peugeot 404 represents a model year from the latter days of a long production period in which the design and basic construction remained largely unchanged. Within Peugeot's history, the 404 occupies a recognizable place as the successor to the 403 and as the precursor to the later 504.
