The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL belongs to the R107 series, which was produced from 1971 to 1989, making it one of the brand's longest-built model series. The 450 SL was mainly delivered in the 1970s and was positioned within the R107 series as a version with a V8 engine. This model was mainly delivered in the North American market, where it met the demand for comfortable, open two-seaters with a high level of finish. The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL combined the classic proportions of a roadster with the brand's then signature safety technology.
Within Mercedes-Benz development, the R107 generation represented a further refinement of the SL concept introduced in the 1950s. The body of the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL was designed with attention to passive safety, including reinforced doors and a rigid passenger cell. The chassis was based on Mercedes-Benz passenger car technology of the time, which contributed to stable handling and comfort. Characteristic of the R107 is the combination of an independent suspension all round and disc brakes, at the time a fixture within the upper segment.
The design of the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL is characterized by clean lines, a long hood and a relatively short rear end. The car came with a cloth hood and a removable hardtop, which made the model suitable for use in different seasons. The interior generally used durable materials and an uncluttered layout, in line with Mercedes-Benz's brand philosophy in the 1970s. The R107 series grew to become a recognizable presence within the streetscape and remained technically and visually advanced throughout its long production period.
The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL occupies a distinct place within the R107 series as a V8 variant from the early production years of this model. Due to its positioning, period of construction and use of an eight-cylinder engine, the 450 SL is a representative example of the luxury roadsters produced by Mercedes-Benz during this period.
