The 1975 Daf 46 Super Luxe is a model from the last period in which DAF independently produced passenger cars, shortly before the passenger car division was taken over by Volvo. Introduced in 1974 as the successor to the DAF 44, the Daf 46 combined familiar DAF technology with a Volvo-developed rear axle construction. This model thus marks a transitional phase in the history of the Dutch marque, in which existing technology was further developed with influences from the new owner.
A characteristic feature of the Daf 46 Super Luxe 1975 is the use of the Variomatic transmission, the continuously variable drive system for which DAF became internationally known. This system made shifting unnecessary and distinguished the brand in the compact segment of the 1970s. Compared to its predecessor, the Daf 46 received a modified suspension with a De Dion rear axle, which was a significant technical change within the DAF program at the time.
The Super Luxe version positioned the 1975 Daf 46 Super Luxe as a more extensively dressed variant within the model range. Within the compact class in which DAF operated, the brand focused on practical and accessible mobility. The bodywork was designed by Michelotti, who was responsible for several DAF models from this period, establishing recognizable lines.
The Daf 46 Super Luxe 1975 was produced at a time when demand for compact and efficient cars was increasing in Europe. The model was built in Born and formed the technical basis for the later Volvo 66, which was further developed after the acquisition. This gives the Daf 46 a clear place within the evolution of both DAF and Volvo in the compact segment of the seventies.
