Description

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 Kompressor belongs to the first generation SLK, internally referred to as R170, introduced in 1996. With this model, Mercedes-Benz launched a compact roadster within the premium segment. Characteristic of the Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 Kompressor 2002 is the combination of a two-seat configuration and a steel, fully electrically operated hardtop, a system that contributed to the model's popularity within its class at the time.

The designation "Kompressor" refers to the use of a mechanical compressor on the four-cylinder gasoline engine, a technique that Mercedes-Benz employed during this period to combine efficiency and performance. The SLK series was produced in Bremen and found sales worldwide, thanks in part to its compact size and recognizable design with short overhangs and a relatively long hood. In 2000, the R170 underwent a facelift, which included changes to exterior and interior details; a 2002 example falls within this later production phase.

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 Kompressor is equipped with an electronic hardtop, which allows the car to be used as both a closed coupe and an open roadster. This so-called Vario roof is operated fully automatically and disappears into the trunk. The system was a distinguishing feature within the segment and was later also used in other models of the brand.

Within the model line, the SLK 200 Kompressor positioned itself as an entry-level variant, focusing on a balanced combination of comfort and sporty appearance. The 2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 Kompressor was part of a series produced until 2004, after which a completely new generation was introduced.
