Introduced in 1979 as a further development of the 400, the Ferrari 400i was part of the 2+2 model series that began with the 365 GT4 2+2. Together with the 365 GT4 2+2, 400 and later 412, the Ferrari 400i constitutes the longest-running model series in Ferrari history, with a production period totaling seventeen years. This underlines the importance of the model within the brand's range. Whereas at its introduction the Ferrari 400i was received with reservation by purists, its appreciation has increased over the years.
Under the long hood of the Ferrari 400i lies a 4.8-liter V12 engine, based on the Gioachino Colombo-designed engine concept that was also used in previous iconic Ferrari models. In the 400i, this powerplant produced 340 horsepower. The switch to fuel injection, to which the “i” in the type designation refers, marked a technical evolution within the model program. A total of 884 examples of the Ferrari 400i were produced, contributing to the relative rarity of this particular type within Ferrari offerings from that period.
This 1981 example comes in the color Beige Doré Metallizzato, combined with a two-tone beige/brown leather interior. At the time, this color scheme was only available through the option list. The interior features full leather upholstery all the way to the headliner. The available equipment includes an original Blaupunkt radio/cassette, power windows, a BOSCH telephone and air conditioning.
The Ferrari 400i was found in a collection in Germany. Several booklets are included with the car. As such, this Ferrari 400i offers a representative example of the model within the brand's long-standing 2+2 tradition. To get a good idea of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
