The 1959 Bristol 406 is a four-door sports saloon by British manufacturer Bristol Cars, produced in a relatively limited run of about 174 between 1958 and 1961. This model marked a period of transition for the marque, changing the design to a wider and more practical body, while retaining its distinctive engineering base. The Bristol 406 features an aluminum body and is equipped with the 2.2-liter six-cylinder Bristol engine, based on prewar BMW designs, combined with an overdrive manual transmission. This example is a matching numbers car with a read mileage of 62,000 miles.
Within the history of the Bristol 406, the model was known for its refined handling and attention to detail, fitting within the brand's exclusive positioning. The technical basis, including the engine concept, was further developed by Bristol from the knowledge the brand acquired after World War II. This particular example has had four owners during its lifetime and has been with its current owner for about’ten years. During that time, various work has been carried out, including an engine overhaul, modifications to the cooling system and brake components, and further optimization of the handling. In addition, the car was recently tested on a roller dynamometer.
The Bristol 406 comes with documentation such as the original instruction booklet, a Spares Manual and copyën of factory records from Bristol Cars, as well as original keys and an inspection lamp. The vehicle has been used for longer drives and events, including participation in a trackday at Goodwood and a visit to Classic Le Mans. Also, the car was recently driven over a distance of approximately 550 kilometers to an auction site. To get a good idea of the lot we recommend you come to the viewing day.
