BMW Alpina B6 3.5S 1989

The 1989 BMW Alpina B6 3.5S is a modified version by Alpina, based in Buchloe, based on the BMW E30 M3. Alpina has worked closely with BMW since the 1960s and was officially recognized as an independent automobile manufacturer in 1983. The B6 3.5S was produced in a very limited edition of only 62 units between October 1987 and January 1991. The example offered here is number 42 of this series.

The B6 3.5S is technically and visually distinct from the standard BMW versions from the same period. Whereas the regular BMW E30 M3 was equipped with the four-cylinder S14 engine from BMW Motorsport GmbH, Alpina replaced this power source with a six-cylinder in-line engine with two valves per cylinder and duplex distribution chain, based on BMW technology and developed in accordance with the Group N motorsport regulations in force at the time.

With a bore of 92.0 mm and a stroke of 86 mm, this resulted in a displacement of 3,430 cc. The engine had a compression ratio of 10.0:1 and produced 254 hp (187 kW) and 320 Nm of torque.

Alpina made several technical modifications:
• Replacement of the standard connecting rods with longer steel connecting rods
• Shorter Mahle pistons with higher-mounted piston pins
• Completely revised cylinder head with accurately measured combustion chambers
• Electric cooling fan instead of viscous coupling
• Bosch Motronic engine management with two different mappings (S- and N-mode), selectable via a switch above the radio
• Overrun fuel cut-off system
• Interchangeable and programmable chip (optional), which allowed for a sportier character
• Stainless steel Alpina exhaust manifold and exhaust system with wider pipes
• Three-way catalytic converter with heated lambda sensor

The chassis remained basically the same as that of the standard BMW E30 M3. However, the rims and tires were replaced with specific Alpina rims in size 8J x 16 inches, fitted with Michelin MXX tires in size 225/45/16.

The rear axle ratio was 2.79:1 (compared to 3.25:1 on the standard M3), combined with a 25% limited slip differential. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h was achieved in 6.6 seconds.
