The 1988 Mercedes-Benz 230 GE belongs to the first generation of the G-Class, referred to internally as the W460 series. This model was developed as an off-road vehicle with a ladder chassis and rigid axles, and was produced from 1979 in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria. Originally intended for both civilian and military applications, the G-Class was distinguished by its functional design and robust construction. Over the years, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class grew to become an established part of the brand's model range.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 GE featured a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, with the designation “E” standing for Einspritzung, or fuel injection. Within the W460 series, the 230 GE constituted one of the common gasoline variants in the 1980s. The model came with permanent all-wheel drive and an intermediate transmission, matching the original concept of the G-Class as a versatile off-road vehicle. The technical design with a separate chassis and an angular body remained characteristic of this generation.
In 1988, the W460 series was in the later phase of its production period, before being succeeded by the W461 and W463. The basic architecture of the Mercedes-Benz 230 GE remained largely unchanged throughout its production years, contributing to the model's recognizability and continuïteity. The combination of a functional interior, uncluttered body styles and an emphasis on durability was in keeping with the G-Class's original intended use.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 GE occupies a position within the history of the G-Class as a representative of the early civilian versions with gasoline engines. Due to its year of construction in 1988, this example falls within the classic period of the first generation. The G-Class has been produced to the present day, with the original concept being further developed over the decades. To get a good impression of the lot, we advise you to come to the viewing day.
