The 1996 Mercedes-Benz 290 GD belongs to the W461 generation of the G-Class, a model series that builds on the original G-concept introduced in the late 1970s. Developed in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch, the G-Class was known from the beginning for its ladder chassis construction and functional design. Over the years, the model evolved from a primarily utilitarian vehicle to a more broadly deployable off-road vehicle with civilian applications, while largely retaining its technical basis.
The Mercedes-Benz has rear-wheel drive but the 4X4 option can also be used. The angular body design and separately mounted fenders remained true to the original concept, which contributed to the model's recognizability.
During its production period, the Mercedes-Benz 290 GD was used both privately and on business. The model found application in government services, defense and in civilian use, thanks in part to the combination of a solid chassis and diesel engineization. The build quality and modular nature of the G-Class allowed a variety of configurations depending on market and application.
The 1996 Mercedes-Benz 290 GD thus represents a version from a development phase in which traditional off-road vehicle technology was combined with the modernizations characteristic of the W461 generation.
