The Saab 96 was introduced in 1960 as the successor to the Saab 93 and remained in production until 1980. The model built on the brand's aviation background, visible in the aerodynamically shaped body and distinctive rounded roofline. During its production years, the Saab 96 underwent several technical advancements, with the original two-stroke concept being replaced by a V4 engine from Ford in 1967. The 1971 Saab 96 belongs to this later generation and thus represents an important phase in the model's evolution.
The body of the Saab 96 is characterized by a compact build with relatively high windows and a clear emphasis on safety, an aspect that Saab was strongly committed to during this period. The model featured front-wheel drive, which at the time contributed to stable handling in a variety of conditions. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Saab 96 gained fame through successful participations in international rallies, including victories in the RAC Rally and the Monte Carlo Rally, which gave the model a permanent place in the brand's motorsport history.
During the production period, detailed changes were made to the interior, safety features and technical equipment, among other things, in accordance with the regulations and market developments of the time. In the process, the Saab 96 remained true to its original design philosophy, focusing on functionality and solidity. In total, more than half a million units of the Saab 96 were produced, making the model one of the brand's longer-built types.
The 1971 Saab 96 occupies a position within the model series in which the technical development had been completed and the model had reached its final form. This year of construction falls within a period when Saab continued to build on its reputation for safety and innovative engineering.
