The 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL belongs to the R107 series, which was produced from 1971 to 1989 and became one of the longest-built models in the brand's history. A total of about 237,000 examples of the R107 series were produced worldwide. Within this series, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL was one of the prominent versions and was mainly delivered in the 1970s and up to 1980 in various markets. At the time, the model positioned itself as a luxury two-seater roadster with distinctive styling and a focus on comfort and durability.
The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL was equipped with a V8 engine and an automatic transmission, which allowed the model to meet the demand for powerful and smooth-riding convertibles in the upper segment. Characteristic features of the R107 generation are its solid body structure, relatively wide track width and distinctive proportions with long hood and short rear end. Safety features such as reinforced doors and a rigid passenger cell were in line with the technical direction taken by Mercedes-Benz during this period.
The design of the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL comes from Friedrich Geiger, who was also involved in earlier SL generations. The design is characterized by clean lines and an understated appearance typical of Mercedes-Benz of the 1970s and 1980s. The removable hardtop and fabric soft top made the model suitable for use in different seasons. Within the model series, the 450 SL occupied a firm position between the six-cylinder and later V8 variants.
This 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL represents the later production years of the 450 version within the R107 series, shortly before it was succeeded by other engine variants. Due to its long production period and international popularity, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL remains a recognizable presence within the brand's classic segment. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
