Description

Introduced in the early 2000s as an open variant of the 4200 Coupe, the Maserati 4200 Spider marks an important period in the brand's history, during which Maserati revamped its model lineup under the guidance of Ferrari. This 2004 example belongs to the first generation of 4200 Spider models, which were produced between 2001 and 2007. Positioned as a luxury 2+2 convertible within the upper sports car segment, the Maserati 4200 Spider combined Italian design with technology created in collaboration with Ferrari.

The design of the Maserati 4200 Spider comes from Giorgetto Giugiaro and his design house Italdesign. It is characterized by flowing lines, a low nose and wide rear end, in keeping with Maserati's design language of the period. The open body was specifically developed with additional reinforcements over the closed version to ensure structural rigidity. The fabric hood is electrically operated; on this example, the roof requires a small push by hand, but otherwise functions electrically.

Technically, the Maserati 4200 Spider was distinguished by the use of an atmospheric V8 engine, developed within the collaboration between Maserati and Ferrari. This engine concept was used in several Maserati models of the period and was known for its direct throttle response and characteristic engine sound. The 4200 Spider was available with several transmission options, including a manual gearbox and an automated manual transmission, depending on version and market.

Within the model range, the Maserati 4200 Spider was the successor to the Maserati 3200 GT Spider, which included further development of the engine and electronic systems. The introduction of this model contributed to the repositioning of Maserati as a manufacturer of sporty luxury cars with a wider international market. The 2004 Maserati 4200 Spider thus represents a phase in which the brand further consolidated its technical base and design direction.
