The 1996 Mercedes-Benz 290 GD belongs to the W461 generation of the G-Class, a model series that builds on the original G-concept introduced in the late 1970s. The G-Class was developed in collaboration with Steyr-Daimler-Puch and was known from the outset for its ladder chassis construction and functional design. Over the years, the model evolved from a primarily utilitarian vehicle to a more versatile off-road vehicle with civilian applications, while largely retaining its technical basis.
The Mercedes-Benz has rear-wheel drive, but the 4X4 option can also be used. The angular body design and separately mounted fenders remained faithful to the original concept, contributing to the model's recognizability.
During its production period, the Mercedes-Benz 290 GD was used by both private individuals and businesses. The model was used by government agencies, the military, and in civilian applications, thanks in part to the combination of a solid chassis and diesel engine. The build quality and modular nature of the G-Class allowed for a variety of configurations, depending on the market and application.
The 1996 Mercedes-Benz 290 GD thus represents a version from a development phase in which traditional off-road technology was combined with the modernizations characteristic of the W461 generation.
