Description

The 1964 Mercedes-Benz 190D is a timeless example of German solidity and craftsmanship. This model, belonging to the W110 series, was produced at a time when Mercedes definitively established itself as a manufacturer of extremely reliable and luxurious cars’s. The W110, also known as the ‘Heckflosse’ because of its subtle fins at the rear, combined classic elegance with technical refinement and quickly became popular among both private and business drivers. In the process, the 190D was known as one of the most durable models within the range, thanks in part to the reliable diesel engine that could handle unprecedented mileage.

Under the hood is a 1.9-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, a power source that excelled in efficiency and reliability in the ‘60s. With an output of about 55 hp, the 190D was not a speed monster, but rather a car that was praised for its smoothness, low fuel consumption and indestructible character. At a time when diesel engines were not universally taken for granted, Mercedes proved that a diesel could not only be robust, but also refined and suitable for daily use.

The design of the W110 reflects the understated class for which Mercedes was known at the time. The clean lines, subtle chrome details and the typical ‘tail fins’ give the car an elegant look that still looks stylish today. The interior is equally characteristic, with a brightly designed dashboard, large round clocks and thoughtful ergonomics that were progressive at the time. The quality of the materials used ensured that many examples, even after decades, are still in remarkably good condition.

The W110 series was loved not only for its reliability, but also for its safety innovations. Mercedes was one of the first manufacturers to take passive safety seriously, and the W110 was one of the first models to feature a deformed safety cage and crumple zones, making the car safer than many of its contemporaries. This underscored the progressive vision of the marque and made the 190D a model that was not only technically impressive, but also optimally protected its occupants.
