The 1974 Porsche 914 1.8 is an unusual appearance within the automotive world, thanks in part to the collaboration between Porsche and Volkswagen. This model was originally designed as a compact sports car with a mid-engine, which provided exceptionally balanced handling. The car was initially sold in the United States, with Philadelphia as its original delivery location. In 2008, this Porsche came to the Netherlands, where a restoration center in Brabant gave the car a complete optical overhaul. In the process, the bodywork was repainted and given a thorough anti-rust treatment.
The engine, a 1.8-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, was completely disassembled and rebuilt by the specialist VW Air House in Hillegom in 2022. Since that engine overhaul, it has been driven about 10,000 kilometers. The engine delivers the distinctive, lively driving feel that makes the 914 so beloved, with direct steering and a responsive character that invites active driving. The odometer reading is displayed in miles and shows the original reading. After restoration, the counter was reset.
The exterior is characterized by classic elements such as the original Fuchs wheels and chrome bumpers, which were offered as optional equipment at the time. These details give the car a stylish and authentic look. The Porsche 914 combines the low weight with the mid-engine configuration, resulting in a dynamic handling that still impresses today. Many maintenance bills come with the car showing that thousands of euros have been invested over the last few years.
On the inside we find a clear and functional dashboard with a center console in which the gauges are fully operational. This was an option at the time and today is a valued detail that underlines the sporty nature of the car. The seating position is low and sporty, as befits a true Porsche, while the interior is in clean condition.
The Porsche 914 is becoming increasingly rare and is gaining more recognition as a collectible classic. The combination of a restoration, a completely overhauled engine and the characteristic options make this car an interesting object for the enthusiast of German sports cars.
