The car offered here is from the collection of BP Classics. The following information was made available by the seller.
The last true sports sedan developed by Volvo in cooperation with Porsche, the Volvo 850, was the car that significantly improved Volvo's image in the 1990s. Before the 850 era, Volvo was mostly associated with boring drivers and cars with the streamlines of a bus shelter. Therefore, Volvo decided to design a modern and sporty car that would change this image.
Despite its angular design, the car had good aerodynamics. Moreover, it was the first Volvo with front-wheel drive and the first car with four airbags. Volvo was determined to build a successful model, so a lot of money was invested in the design. The sedan and station wagon produced between 1991 and 1997 have now become a popular youngtimer, partly because of its timeless design and high level of reliability.
Under the hood was always a five-cylinder engine, which gave the 850 a very characteristic sound, better known among enthusiasts as "The Roffel." To emphasize its sporty character, Volvo decided to participate in the British Touring Car Championship. It was remarkable that Volvo even used a station wagon on the circuit!
In 1995, according to many, the highlight of the 850 range was presented, the Volvo 850 T5-R. The top model, available only in flag yellow, jet black and dark green, was based on the T5 and co-developed by Porsche. The German sports car manufacturer supported the Swedes technically, but also interfered with the interior, resulting in, among other things, the chic combination of leather with Alcantara. With modifications to the electronics and turbocharger, the 2.3-liter engine now produced 240 horsepower. This led to a 0-100 sprint in 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.
Mostly in black or green, the T5-R is a real sleeper because of its modest appearance in family packaging. In 1996, with 25 hp more, the 850R was its successor, and in 1997-1998 the V70R.
About this car, SB-620-V: This car was sold new in Sweden in early 1995 and we bought it in 2018 for our own collection. This car would be a great example for a privécollection, and of course the correct black Alcantara folder is included. It has the sunroof, original black leather alcantara seats and the very nice original 17-inch rims, including the spare tire. The only minor issue might be the yellow door openers, but they can easily be replaced with a set of original ones. Also to complete it, we will add an original type Volvo radio.
Check out the quality of this very nice sedan on viewing day and convince yourself of this beauty. To get a good idea of the lot we recommend you come to the viewing day.
