W111 was a chassis code for Mercedes Benz's top models. Four-door sedans were built from 1959 to 1968, but two-door coupes and convertibles were also built from 1961 to 1971. Mercedes began work on replacements for the W111 S-Class as early as 1965, but had no plans for new two-door versions. Therefore, they kept the two-door W111 versions in production longer than the W111 sedans (which was replaced by the W108 in 1968).
