The car offered here is from the collection of BP Classics. The following information was made available by the seller.
The last true sports sedan developed by Volvo in collaboration with Porsche, the Volvo 850, marked an important turning point for Volvo in the 1990s. Before the 850, Volvo was often associated with conservative drivers and boxy designs. To polish its image, Volvo began designing a modern and sporty car.
Despite its angular design, the 850 had impressive aerodynamics. It was also the first Volvo with front-wheel drive and four airbags, a testament to Volvo's commitment to innovation and safety. The 850 was always powered by a distinctive five-cylinder engine, known among enthusiasts for its distinctive sound, affectionately called "the rumble."
To further emphasize its sporting appeal, Volvo even entered the British Touring Car Championship with a station wagon variant - an unconventional choice that attracted attention.
In 1995, Volvo introduced what many consider the highlight of the 850 lineup: the Volvo 850 T5-R. Available in striking colors such as flag yellow, jet black and dark green, the T5-R was based on the T5 model but was co-developed with Porsche. Porsche's involvement extended to technical support and interior improvements, including luxury leather and Alcantara upholstery. Thanks to electronic modifications and improvements to the turbocharger, the 2.3-liter engine now produced an impressive 240 horsepower, allowing the T5-R to shoot from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h.
Despite its understated appearance, the T5-R proved to be a formidable performer, especially in black or green, earning it the title of "sleeper" among enthusiasts. The 850R succeeded the T5-R in 1996, followed by the V70R in 1997-1998.
This car, registered as SG-710-Z, was originally sold in Sweden in late 1994. We bought it in northern Sweden and drove it all the way to the Netherlands. The car impresses with its excellent handling, making it a pleasure to drive. This sedan is a fantastic opportunity for a spirited yet practical ride, complete with the distinctive black Alcantara interior. Equipped with a sunroof, original black leather Alcantara seats and pristine 17" Titan wheels, this car also has a charming wooden Volvo steering wheel. The yellow door openers may be a downside, but they can easily be replaced with original ones.
