The Volvo 850 was the car that significantly improved Volvo's image in the 1990s. Before the 850 era, Volvo was mostly associated with boring drivers and cars that looked more like a bus shelter. Therefore, Volvo decided to design a modern and sporty car that would change this image. Despite its square design, the car had good aerodynamics. Moreover, it was the first Volvo with front-wheel drive and the first car with four airbags. Volvo was determined to build a successful model, so a lot of money was invested in the design. The sedan and station wagon produced between 1991 and 1997 have now become popular youngtimers, in part because of their timeless design and high reliability. Under the hood was always a five-cylinder engine, which gave the 850 a very distinctive sound, better known among enthusiasts as "The Roffel."

To emphasize its sporting character, Volvo decided to enter the British Touring Car Championship. It was notable that Volvo even used a station wagon on the circuit! In 1995, according to many, the highlight of the 850 range was presented, the Volvo 850 T5-R. The top model, available only in flag yellow, jet black and dark green, was based on the T5 and co-developed by Porsche. The German sports car manufacturer supported the Swedes technically, but also interfered with the interior, resulting in, among other things, the chic combination of leather with Alcantara. With modifications to the electronics and turbocharger, the 2.3-liter engine now produced 240 horsepower. This led to a 0-100 sprint in 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. Especially in black or green, the T5-R is a real sleeper because of its modest appearance in a family package.

About this car, SL-008-D: We imported this car from Sweden and when we registered it in the Netherlands we did a lot of work. All new brake discs and pads, new suspension and where we found rust, we removed and repaired it. Then we gave the car an ML treatment and installed a new tow bar. We drove the car all the way to Austria and it proved to be a solid car. The engine runs smoothly. The rims are all original and the interior is also original and in good condition. Of course, the car has user marks after 28 years! The car was in our warehouse for the last 2.5 years and when we took it out it had some spots, we think it could use a good professional polish so it will shine all over again.
